Students at the NVRI help make important discoveries that contribute to our understanding of vision and visual disorders. The challenging nature of vision requires a multidisciplinary research approach which means that the NVRI is looking for young researchers whose initial degrees were in anything from biology to engineering.
The NVRI is a leading Australian vision science institute and is led by internationally recognised researchers.
Students at the NVRI work quite independently and gain much experience, however help is always nearby when needed. The NVRI is devoted to full-time scientific research and has full-time staff to help students develop their research methods. Students routinely attend national meetings, and as part of their overall learning experience, PhD students attend an international meeting and visit overseas laboratories.
Each week, the NVRI holds a lab meeting at which a different member must present some of their on-going results, or the results of a peer-reviewed paper. The process also involves constructive feedback on progress and scientific methods.

Melbourne - a city for science
Melbourne is Australia's second largest city and embraces the largest bodies of scientific research, development and business in the southern hemisphere.
The state of Victoria accounts for about 25% of Australia's population, yet we carry out more than 40% of the nation's health and medical research. The universities of greater Melbourne produce more students from the sciences than any other Australian city. We also rank alongside Boston, London and New York as the only cities with two world-class medical teaching universities.
