The Nathan Library
is a specialist collection of books, journals and multimedia
in the fields of optometry, ophthalmology, vision science and
optics.
The collection contains around 100 journal titles, a number of which are unique to Australia. The older journals run from the 1940’s with some incomplete holdings in the earlier years.
The Library has a collection of some 2000 monographs and a diverse collection of technical reports and miscellaneous materials.
The Library has an archival collection containing documents, books and also holds a large collection of audio-visual materials.
Access
The Library is open only to members and staff of the Victorlan
College of Optometry
and the staff and students of the Department of Optometry and
Vision Sciences.
The Nathan Library is located on the first floor of the
VCO, corner of Cardigan
and Keppel Streets Carlton 3053.
Use of the library
All authorized users are welcome to use the Library during opening hours.

Nathan Library Collections
General Collection
Generally loans are for 4 weeks. Restrictions may apply if items are required by other patrons.
Reserve Collections
The Reserve collection holds new materials that are in heavy demand.
Loans are generally restricted to overnight and 2 hours during the day.
Library special Collections
Annual reports
Complete sets of VCO and NVRI annual reports.
Standards collection
Australian and some overseas standards related to our areas of interest.
CIE collection
The Nathan library holds a substantial collection of reports and proceedings from the Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage (CIE) (International Commission on Illumination). It is one of the most comprehensive collections in Australia.
CD-ROM collection
CD-ROMs are held in the reserve and can be borrowed as RESERVE collection items.
Reference collection
This collection comprises dictionaries, encyclopedias, yearbooks and other useful reference materials. The material is generally not available for loan.
C. W. Kett Collection
This collection holds very old and valuable books that cannot be borrowed but can be looked at in the library.
J Lloyd Hewett collection
This special collection covers the history of ophthalmology and books can be borrowed for 4 weeks.
Journal Collection
The most recent journal issues are on display.
Journals are for use in the library and are not for loan. A large number of Journals are now available online. Please check the catalogue or with the librarian.
Services available in the Library
Bibliographic searches, training & Inter-library loans
The librarian can conduct bibliographic and literature searches for members by using a number of specialist databases and can also provide assistance and advice on the various resources available.
Members of the college can request and order journal articles, proceedings papers, sections of reports, books, and book chapters. If the resource is not available in the Nathan library an interlibrary loan can be arranged from other libraries.
Requests must be made on a standard copyright form which must be posted, faxed or emailed to the Nathan library.
Photocopy, printing & scanning in the Library
The Library has a photocopier, a laser printer and a scanner linked to the Library computers.
Electronic resources
The library has 2 computers and is wireless enabled, allowing members and library users to use their own laptops.
Audio-Visual Subscription Service
The library subscribes to the popular Audio-Digest Foundation (USA) CDs and maintains a collection of Audio-Visual Material. Members may choose to join the AV subscription service to receive regular material through the post and have CPD points notified on their behalf to the OAA.
