Clinical Services - (Metropolitan)Melbourne Optometry ClinicThe Melbourne Optometry Clinic provides low cost optometry care for people in our community who are disadvantaged and of limited means through a network of clinics and services in metropolitan Melbourne. Off site and outreach services are also provided to enhance access and delivery of care to people with particular needs. The Clinic provides specialist optometry care for patients referred by optometrists, medical practitioners and other health care providers. Our facilities include equipment and technology not readily available in the community and some staff have specialist expertise and experience in areas of optometry, clinical assessment and management. The Melbourne Optometry Clinic provides resources for clinical training of undergraduate optometry students and offers employment through clinical residencies for recent graduates for accelerated development of clinical skills and expertise. The Clinic employs a large number of sessional optometrists who may also work in private practice. The Clinic provides professional and community education, advocacy and support and has a responsibility to provide leadership to the profession through innovation and the maintenance of the highest standards of care. The Clinic manages 35,000 patients a year from its main clinic in Carlton, four regional clinics and network of thirteen low vision clinics. A staff of over 30 full time and 40 sessional optometrists work with 15 reception, dispensary and technical staff to provide the services. The Clinic operates general (primary care), paediatric, contact lens, ocular disease, disability, visual functions and low vision clinics, the latter being a multi-disciplinary service run in conjunction with the Vision Australia Foundation.
